The years-long conflict between Russia and Ukraine escalated this weekend after Russia seized three Ukrainian naval ships.

BBC reported:

Russia has fired on and seized three Ukrainian naval vessels off the Crimean Peninsula in a major escalation of tensions between the two countries.

Two gunboats and a tug were captured by Russian forces. A number of Ukrainian crew members were injured.

Each country blames the other for the incident. On Monday Ukrainian MPs are due to vote on declaring martial law.

The incident brought bipartisan condemnation from the U.S. Senate:

Nolan Peterson, a foreign correspondent for Daily Signal based in the Ukraine, said the conflict was “the most dangerous moment I’ve seen in Ukraine in years.”

And UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, who is scheduled to leave the Trump administration at the end of the year, tweeted that the UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting at 11am ET to address the incident.

The UN Security Council has 15 members, including the U.S. and Russia.
