Sinema’s Bad Stretch in AZ-Sen. Race Got Worse With Monday’s Debate

A bad stretch for Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), the Democratic candidate in the race to be Arizona’s next U.S. senator, became worse on Monday night, after Sinema met Rep. Martha McSally (R-AZ), the Republican candidate, in the only debate the two will have before Election Day.

McSally went after Sinema’s radical anti-war record in the closing minutes of the debate:

McSally’s fiery attack on Sinema referenced a CNN story published last week about the Democrat’s past as a liberal and anti-war activist. That story included a 2003 radio interview in which Sinema said it’s “[f]ine” if her constituents go fight in the Taliban.

“By force?” Hancock asked. “By me, as an individual, if I want to go fight in the Taliban army, I go over there and I’m fighting for the Taliban. I’m saying that’s a personal decision…”

“Fine,” Sinema interjected, “I don’t care if you want to do that, go ahead.”

And the rough debate moment for Sinema builds on a week of awful headlines for the liberal firebrand, who has since tried to reshape her reputation as a moderate.
