Siren for Dems: Their Lead on the Congressional Ballot Just Disappeared

Democrats running for U.S. House and U.S. Senate are likely sweating Wednesday morning after a new poll released by Politico and Morning Consult found the party’s advantage on a generic congressional ballot has disappeared.

Politico‘s Steven Shepard reported:

Republicans have erased the Democratic advantage on the generic congressional ballot in a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll that, for the first time since April, also shows President Donald Trump’s approval rating equaling the percentage of voters who disapprove of his job performance.

Fully 39 percent of registered voters say they would support the GOP candidate for Congress in their district, while 38 percent would back the Democratic candidate. Nearly a quarter of voters, 23 percent, are undecided.

Now, 2018 is still an uphill battle for congressional Republicans. They’re in charge of both the executive and legislative branches in a midterm election year, which almost always creates political headwinds for the majority party.

But with America’s economy humming along, the president’s standing with voters improving, and the GOP leaning toward successfully recruiting high-profile candidates in key races, Democrats appear to be treading on dangerous ground less than nine months before the election.
