Socialist Party Raises $200k for Charlottesville Victims, Hasn’t Paid Out

Following white supremacist violence in Charlottesville, the National Political Committee (NPC) of the Democratic Socialists of America coordinated a fundraising campaign to pay for the medical expenses of the victims. However, according to the Richmond branch of the DSA, none of the victims have seen any of the $200,000 raised.

According to a Medium post from the Richmond group, the DSA has only non-governmental organizations (NGO) to distribute the funds that would, the Richmond branch says, disincentivize fund collection by victims.

DSA-Richmond has submitted a proposal to their national committee for local disbursement of funds, but the party heads rejected the initiative.

The national DSA has apparently decided to simply keep the funds, offering no concrete date for distribution:

It has been over two months since the events in Charlottesville and none of the funds raised have been paid out. Injured comrades are justifiably frustrated with DSA’s inaction and their medical bills and unmet living expenses are only getting larger day by day.

As of right now, we have been given no concrete information regarding when the NCF expects to begin providing financial assistance to the victims of August 12th. Sadly, the closest thing we have been given to a timeframe for this aid to reach our comrades is February.

The DSA pushes strongly for a government, political take over of the health care industry, but their inability to distribute charity funds calls into question the wisdom of their health care management.

In September, the DSA endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) “Medicare-for-all” bill, which was supported by several other high-profile Democratic senators. Universal health care has been a plank of the socialists for years.
