South Korea’s Moon Echoes Trump: We ‘Have All Been Able to Escape the Threat of War’

On Thursday, South Korea’s president echoed President Donald Trump in claiming peace talks between Trump and Kim have led the U.S., Japan, and the Koreas “to escape the threat of war, nuclear weapons and missiles.”

Reuters reported on South Korea President Moon Jae-in’s meeting with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo:

However, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said the world, through the summit, had escaped the threat of war, echoing Trump’s upbeat assessment of his meeting with Kim.

“What’s most important was that the people of the world, including those in the United States, Japan and Koreans, have all been able to escape the threat of war, nuclear weapons and missiles,” Moon told Pompeo.

Moon’s claim echoes one made by Trump on Twitter on Wednesday:

Trump earned heavy criticism from Democrats, and even a light brushback from a Republican leader.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said, of another one of Trump’s tweets on North Korea, “if only it were that easy.”

And Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-TX) said “no,” when asked if North Korea is no longer a nuclear threat.
