Stephanie Ruhle Blames GOP for Democrats’ Obstruction of CHIP Funding

The MSNBC host attacked the wrong party for Congress's failure to reauthorize the program.

MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle took a shot at Republicans on Friday, accusing them of refusing to reauthorize the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), but she left out the fact that the Democratic Party was the group that actually voted against the reauthorization. Ruhle was repeating claims from late-night host Jimmy Kimmel that blamed Republicans for CHIP’s expiration, an assertion The Washington Post dismissed.

“Right now, the Children’s Health Insurance Program has run out, and Republicans are saying they don’t currently have the money for it, and they’re going to get to it,” Ruhle said. “In some states, as of January, children will be without health insurance.”

“On what basis is the president making the argument, ‘Child tax credit’s going up by the day and those Democrats are doing nothing?'” Ruhle asked.

The Post pointed out that this liberal narrative is incomplete. “The GOP-led House of Representatives on Nov. 3 passed a CHIP reauthorization bill by a vote of 242-174, with most Democrats voting against it because of funding offsets,” they wrote, setting the record straight.

Their report explained that “no immediate crisis” threatened CHIP funding for Americans.

The Post had to write their fact check after Kimmel made this false claim on his nationally broadcast ABC show, implying Republicans were to blame:

So this happened because Congress, about 72 days ago, failed to approve funding for CHIP since the first time it was created two decades ago. This is literally a life-and-death program for American kids. It’s always had bipartisan support. But this year, they let the money for it expire while they work on getting tax cuts for their billionaire and millionaire donors.

Perhaps Ruhle missed the fact-checking when she prepared her segment.
