Billionaire Democratic donor Tom Steyer, in a speech at the Des Moines Register‘s “Political Soapbox” at the Iowa State Fair on Tuesday, told the crowd that “mental health” is “code for” wanting liberal policies enacted in Washington, D.C.

“I’ve been doing these town halls, and I did a town hall a couple months ago in Des Moines, and I also did a town hall in Cedar Rapids,” Steyer began.

“What’s the biggest issue in Iowa?” he recounted asking one older Iowa voter asking. “And he said, ‘mental health.'”

Steyer made a face and threw up his arms at this response. “Mental health? Is that code for opioids or PTSD for vets coming back or shutting down mental health facilities?” he asked to himself.

The potential 2020 candidate explained what he thought “mental health” truly meant: “Actually, what I think it’s code for is the people of Iowa feeling as if they’ve been disrespected, overlooked, and abandoned by our political system and our democracy.”

The remedy? The billionaire urged the crowd to organize against “corporate interests” and enact universal healthcare and free education.
