The majority of Americans do not want Congress to begin impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump, according to a new poll conducted by SurveyMonkey and released by Axios.

Overall, just 44 percent of U.S. adults favor impeachment, while 51 percent oppose it. A closer look at the numbers reveals the partisan divide that pervades this issue – 79 percent of Democrats say they support impeachment, while just eight percent of Republicans agree. Among independents, 49 percent support beginning impeachment proceedings.

Here’s what Axios wrote:

Impeachment would be so disruptive to the country, if Democrats actually attempted it, that they’re sure to be watching the poll numbers closely for signs that a majority of the country would support it.

If that’s the case, then expect Democrats like House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to repeat what she’s been saying all year: impeachment is not on the table in her mind.

“Impeachment is not something that is a partisan exercise. Unless you have bipartisanship, you’re just acting politically,” Pelosi said during an interview with KQED last week.

The SurveyMonkey poll was conducted August 22-24 among 4,362 U.S. adults. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
