SURVEY: How Americans View ICE, the FBI, the IRS, and More

Americans’ views of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are divided by party, while the National Park Service and the Census Bureau enjoy bipartisan support. Those are a few of the takeaways from a new Pew Research Center survey on what Americans think about several federal agencies.

Amid the “abolish ICE” movement in the Democratic Party, Democrats’ views of ICE are quite low.

Nearly eight-in-ten conservative Republicans (77%) view ICE favorably, with 40% expressing a very favorable opinion. Among moderate and liberal Republicans, views are less positive (62% give ICE a favorable rating, including 29% who say they view it very favorably).

A large majority of liberal Democrats (82%) view ICE unfavorably, with 53% viewing the agency very unfavorably. Conservative and moderate Democrats feel less negatively about ICE (60% unfavorable, 35% very unfavorable).

Meanwhile, Republicans’ views of the FBI are tanking, which could be thanks in part to President Trump’s regular trashing on the intelligence agency.

Today, Republicans are divided in their views of the FBI (49% favorable, 44% unfavorable). In January 2017, shortly before President Donald Trump took office, positive views of the FBI among Republicans outnumbered negative opinions by about three-to-one (65% to 21%).

There’s also a partisan divide in views on the tax-collecting Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Nearly two-thirds (65 percent) of Democrats view the agency positively, while only 49 percent of Republicans have a favorable view.

A few agencies have stood a test of time, enjoying bipartisan support: the National Park Service (NPS) is viewed favorably by 85 percent of Democrats and 84 percent of Republicans, while the Census Bureau is viewed favorably by 74 percent of Democrats and 66 percent of Republicans.
