Susan Collins’ Reelection Campaign Had a Very Good Week

Senate Democrats have pegged Sen. Susan Collins’ (R-ME) Senate seat as one of their top targets to flip in 2020 as they seek to retake control of the Senate, but those efforts were dealt a big blow on Thursday.

Former ambassador to the U.N. and national security adviser under President Obama, Susan Rice, who openly considered challenging Collins in 2020 over the Republican’s support for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation, announced on Thursday that she would not challenge Collins.

“In the course of weighing it all, I’ve decided with my family that the timing really isn’t right for us,” Rice said on Thursday. “I’ve got a daughter going into her junior year in high school in Washington, and this is not the time to move ourselves full-time up to Maine and to put my family through the stresses of a campaign.”

To go along with Rice’s announcement, Collins also picked up an endorsement from Democratic Senator Joe Manchin on Thursday “in a rare rebuff of partisan politics in an increasingly polarized Senate,” according to Politico.
