Tapper Calls Out DNC Chair: Democrats Just Started Caring About Sexual Assault Allegations

"Wait a second 'Democrats have never hesitated to take action?' You mean like in the last year?”

CNN’s Jake Tapper called out Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Tom Perez for the Democratic Party’s history of not addressing allegations of sexual assault against the party’s leaders during an interview on Sunday.

Tapper asked Perez about allegations of domestic abuse against DNC Vice Chair Rep. Keith Ellison made by Ellison’s ex-girlfriend and what Perez would say to women who ask why he is still the Vice Chair of the DNC.

“What I say is that we should always take those complaints seriously and we do and that’s why an investigation was conducted. That’s why Congressman Ellison asked for a House ethics investigation, and Democrats have never hesitated to take action, unlike Republicans,” Perez said.

Tapper interrupted Perez at this point to challenge his claim that “Democrats have never hesitated to take action” when it comes to accusations of assault.

“Wait a second ‘Democrats have never hesitated to take action?’ You mean like in the last year, or do you mean historically? Because historically, I could go through a list of people,” Tapper said.

“Well, again you saw what happened in Senator Franken’s situation. Democrats didn’t hesitate to do something even if it was difficult because that was the right thing to do,” Perez responded.

“Okay, so you mean in just like the last year. You’re not talking about Ted Kennedy or President Bill Clinton. I mean, we only have a couple minutes left,” Tapper interjected.

“Jake, I’ve been Chair of the Democratic Party for 18 months, and what I’m talking about is we have worked hard to make sure that we are a party that understands that when women succeed America succeeds,” Perez said.

Tapper then asked Perez if he believes Ellison’s ex-girlfriend is lying.

“I think Keith Ellison’s ex-girlfriend deserves to be heard and deserves to be treated with dignity, and deserves to have a fair and full investigation,” Perez said.

Perez then attacked President Trump’s administration but never said whether or not he believes the allegations against Ellison.
