The 14 Senate Democrats Who Voted to Confirm Pompeo to CIA

CIA Director Mike Pompeo faces the Senate Foreign Relations Committee at 10am ET on Thursday, the first step in what’s expected to be a contentious battle over his nomination to lead President Trump’s State Department.

Although Senate Democrats are waffling on his State Department nomination now, 14 Senate Democrats – nearly a third of the caucus – voted to support Pompeo’s nomination to lead CIA in 2017.

They are:

  • Joe Donnelly (D-IN)
  • Dianne Feinstein (D-CA)
  • Maggie Hassan (D-NH)
  • Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND)
  • Tim Kaine (D-VA)
  • Amy Klobuchar (D-MN)
  • Joe Manchin (D-WV)
  • Claire McCaskill (D-MO)
  • Jack Reed (D-RI)
  • Brian Schatz (D-HI)
  • Chuck Schumer (D-NY)
  • Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH)
  • Mark Warner (D-VA)
  • Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI)

Sen. Angus King (I-ME), who caucuses with Democrats, also supported Pompeo. Two other Democratic senators (Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal, both of Connecticut) did not vote on the Pompeo nomination.

Five of the senators on the above list – Donnelly, Heitkamp, Klobuchar, Manchin, and McCaskill – are up for reelection in 2018 and are vulnerable this fall. Their constituents will be watching to see if they flip on Pompeo now that he’s nominated to lead the State Department.

Heitkamp and Manchin, in particular, had praise for Pompeo. The former suggested in a statement that Pompeo would be “above partisan politics” at CIA, and the latter praised Pompeo’s “distinguished career in public service.”
