The 5 Miscalculations Chuck Schumer Made During the Shutdown

Within minutes of announcing a deal had been reached between Senate Republicans and Democrats, many openly asked: why was there a shutdown in the first place?

That’s a fair question. When the dust settled, Democrats got virtually nothing out of their negotiations. For the most part, the media rightly asked why Democrats, not Republicans, decided to shut the government down.

The Hill breaks down the five miscalculations that Senate Democrats’ leader, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) made when negotiating with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and President Donald Trump:

1. For one thing, they thought Republicans would agree to a very short-term continuing resolution, perhaps for a couple of days, to allow the negotiations to continue without shutting the government.

2. As a result, Democrats were surprised when McConnell refused to move up the timing of a vote on the House-passed month-long stopgap.

3. Schumer and his fellow Democrats also thought they could force Trump to the negotiating table with the threat of a shutdown.

4. But surprisingly to Schumer and his Democratic colleagues, his demand for a meeting with Trump after the shutdown started was met with silence.

5. Instead of getting Trump to agree to the rough outlines of a deal on immigration and spending caps or getting GOP leaders to commit to attaching an immigration deal to a must-pass bill, they settled for a promise from McConnell to debate an immigration bill next month.

Liberal Democrats are furious with Schumer for caving, while red-state Democrats were looking for any excuse to put this fiasco behind them.

Meanwhile, Trump’s tactics worked, demonstrating once again his ability to get what he wants at the negotiating table.
