The 9 Anti-Pelosi Democrats Who Are Now Backing Her Speaker Bid

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is closer than ever to becoming Speaker Pelosi once again, thanks to a few weak-kneed Democrats who had previously opposed her leadership but have since backed down.

The anti-Pelosi Democrats secured a promise from Pelosi, 78, not to serve for more than four years as leader of the House Democratic caucus. Here’s how the deal was described in Politico’s Playbook:

THE COST: Support for term limits for the three senior members of Democratic leadership: Pelosi, 79-year-old Steny Hoyer of Maryland and 78-year-old Jim Clyburn of South Carolina. If the proposal passes — it will come up for discussion and a vote by Feb. 15 — Pelosi, Hoyer and Clyburn can serve in leadership only until the beginning of 2021. They could serve one more term — until the beginning of 2023 — if they are able to get two-thirds support of the caucus. Pelosi will be 82 at the beginning of 2023.

Giving skeptical Democrats further assurances, Pelosi said that even if the term-limit proposal does not pass, she will abide by the agreement.

The Democrats who backed down were the five previously reported, Reps. Perlmutter (D-CO), Foster (D-IL), Sanchez (D-CA), Moulton (D-MA), and Vela (D-TX), along with four others. Two other Democrats, Reps. Higgins (D-NY) and Lynch (D-MA), had already flip flopped on their anti-Pelosi stance. And two new names were added Wednesday evening, Rep. Ryan (D-OH) and Rep.-Elect Cisneros (D-CA).

Pelosi will also likely benefit from some members who ran on promises to support new leadership who will instead vote “present” rather than for another candidate. Whether an anti-Pelosi Democrat flip flops entirely and now backs Pelosi or does so by technicality, the result is the same: there will once again be a Speaker Pelosi in 2019.
