The Bernie-fication of the Dem Party? More Dems Like Socialism Than Capitalism

A new Gallup poll would seem to confirm that the views of Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are going mainstream in the Democratic Party.

The Bernie-fication of the Dem Party? More Dems Like Socialism Than Capitalism

More than half of Democrats have a positive view of socialism in 2018, a new poll from Gallup says. While that result is not new, in Gallup’s years of polling on the question of socialism, for the first time less than half of Democrats have a positive view of capitalism.

From Gallup’s Frank Newport:

For the first time in Gallup’s measurement over the past decade, Democrats have a more positive image of socialism than they do of capitalism. Attitudes toward socialism among Democrats have not changed materially since 2010, with 57% today having a positive view. The major change among Democrats has been a less upbeat attitude toward capitalism, dropping to 47% positive this year — lower than in any of the three previous measures. Republicans remain much more positive about capitalism than about socialism, with little sustained change in their views of either since 2010.

It appears the views of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and rising Democratic star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are taking mainstream hold in the party.

Gallup’s polling suggests young Democrats are the ones dragging the party’s view of capitalism below the 50-percent mark. One potential factor? Many of these young Democrats (aged 18 to 29) were born after the Cold War or too early to remember it.
