Amid failures to reach a broad immigration deal and pledges from Democratic leaders not to shut down the government again, some Republicans in Congress and the White House are floating a new, less ambitious deal to protect young, undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. when they were kids.

The Hill reported:

On Wednesday, the White House floated a “three-for-three” approach to Congress, which would extend Deferred Action on Childhood Arrival (DACA) protections for three years in exchange for three years of border wall funding.

…Among congressional Republicans, the idea of a three-year DACA fix in exchange for wall funding was amenable.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) suggested border wall funding without Republican concessions would be a non-starter for her party, according to The Hill, but it’s unclear what Pelosi would do about border wall funding for an extension of the DACA program.

NTK Network noted on Thursday that a proposed ‘DACA extension for border wall funding’ deal may be a so-called ‘poison pill’ rider for some Democrats, most of whom don’t want to be seen as funding or support President Trump’s proposed border wall.

Still, the plan from Republicans on both sides of Pennsylvania Avenue may be the closest chance yet Congress and the White House have for providing a longer-term solution for DACA recipients.
