The Left’s War on Schumer Runs Into an Obstacle: Schumer’s Colleagues

This week, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has been subject to some of the fiercest criticism of his leadership tenure so far, with far-left activists and leaders upset over Schumer’s handling of the Brett Kavanaugh hearings.

NTK Network noted on Wednesday that those activists told Schumer in a letter – signed by thirteen liberal groups this week – that he’s not doing enough to stop Judge Kavanaugh’s elevation to the Supreme Court. The criticism of Schumer comes even though the minority leader orchestrated an unprecedented delay of the first day of hearings on Tuesday morning.

Several senators came to Schumer’s defense this week in a piece published by Politico on Thursday morning:

“There is universal confidence in the Democratic Caucus for Sen. Schumer, whether they’re the progressives or the more conservative members of our caucus. There’s strong respect and admiration for how he handles diversity in our caucus,” said Maryland Sen. Ben Cardin.

…Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.). praised Schumer for “holding a very wide ranging caucus together in a way that has made strong points in the hearing without causing problems for our 2018 candidates.”

Some Republicans even appeared to empathize with Schumer:

“He’s navigating political rapids. When you have to think about 2018, you can’t go so far to put these purple seats at risk,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). “Let’s put it this way: I don’t think anybody else could do any better.”

Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) mused that “anybody in a position like his has a hard time balancing all the various interests … it’s tough to manage.”

The Hill reported Thursday morning that the far-left criticism of Schumer has continued unabated:

Neil Sroka — a spokesman for Democracy for America, which signed the letter — said Democrats have spent months playing “patty-cake” with Kavanaugh’s nomination, and outside groups are questioning “what the hell Chuck Schumer thinks he’s doing.”

…Another outside group, Credo Action, has a mobile billboard circling Capitol Hill during Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings this week, telling Schumer to “do your job” alongside the hashtag “WTFChuck.”

Is Schumer’s job in jeopardy? If Judge Kavanaugh is confirmed to the Supreme Court – and the progress of this week’s hearing so far suggests he will be confirmed this month – the answer to that question may be yes.
