Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Lupe Valdez did not return a department-issued gun when she resigned as sheriff of Dallas County in December 2017. The gun, a Beretta 9mm pistol, is still missing, according to the Dallas Morning News.

When the gun was not returned, the sheriff’s department filed a report “because the weapon could be in the hands of a criminal or used to commit a crime.”

The gun in question was a replacement given to Valdez in 2011 when her previous gun “sustained a malfunction.”

Raul Reyna, spokesman for the sheriff’s department, told The News Monday in an email: “Former Sheriff Valdez has been approached about the missing weapon and is working with the Sheriff’s Department to locate the missing firearm.”

The department’s spokesman added that it’s possible Valdez returned the gun and then it was misplaced or stolen. However, Valdez “did not clearly state whether she had turned over the gun.”

Valdez is running against incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) in November.
