The Soros-Steyer-Sanders Candidate Won Florida’s Dem Primary for Governor

Andrew Gillum received the backing from some of the biggest Democrat billionaire donors in the party (and, ironically, the guy who villainizes billionaires.)

The Soros-Steyer-Sanders Candidate Won Florida’s Dem Primary for Governor

In the political upset of the night, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum won the Democratic gubernatorial primary in Florida Tuesday night. Gillum’s victory is all the more surprising considering he never finished in first or second place in any poll conducted in the race.

Gillum defeated former Rep. Gwen Graham (D-FL), the daughter of former Governor and U.S. Senator Bob Graham (D-FL), as well as former Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine and businessman Jeff Greene.

Graham led in most of the polls, but her “centrist” message ended up falling short on Tuesday night.

Gillum is anything but a centrist. In fact, the Tallahassee mayor has been endorsed by some of the most powerful liberals in American politics. That includes the Soros family, which has donated half a million dollars to Gillum’s election effort:

Soros, the liberal mega donor and bogeyman to conservatives, gave $250,000 to a Forward Florida, a Gillum associated political committee in April. Combine that with two six-figure donations in 2017, and Soros’ contributions to Gillum now total $450,000. The Soros family has given half a million dollars to Gillum’s cause in all.

It also includes Tom Steyer’s NextGen America. Steyer outlined the work his group did on Gillum’s behalf in a tweet last night:

And Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), the self-professed democratic socialist, endorsed Gillum as well. Last night, he congratulated Gillum via tweet:

While Gillum is no doubt basking the glow of his victory, concern among Democrats should be growing: how can the mayor turn his primary win, in which he lunged far to the left, into a win statewide in center-right Florida? Complicating matters further, an FBI investigation involving Gillum and Tallahassee city government is likely to serve as a dark cloud over his campaign in these final two months.

Gillum faces Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) in the general election in November.
