President Trump’s reelection campaign is focusing on three key battleground states in the early stages of his 2020 effort: Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

Together, the states served as a sort of “blue wall” for Democratic candidates. In fact, no Republican had won Pennsylvania or Michigan since George H.W. Bush in 1988, and no Republican had won Wisconsin since Ronald Reagan’s reelect in 1984.

But that all changed in 2016 when Trump shocked the world and won in these blue-collar Midwest states. According to a Reuters report, Trump’s campaign believes they must recreate his 2016 path to success in 2020.

The Trump campaign also believes it needs to shore up support in Florida, where polling has shown the president struggling lately. But they also indicated that two states where Trump narrowly lost in 2016 could come into play in 2020:

They also see an opportunity for gains in Minnesota and Colorado, two states Trump narrowly lost. The Trump team views those states as competitive places where the president can go on offense, according to the advisers, who asked not to be named so they could speak freely about the campaign strategy.

Still, the campaign is putting its early focus on Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin, namely because he won them in 2016 by a combined 77,000 votes – not exactly a massive margin.

“It is about securing victory in states where the margin of victory was close in 2016,” one campaign official told Reuters.

“Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan put Trump over the top, and they are clearly where this next national election will be won or lost,” added Scott Reed, a Republican political strategist.
