The Worst Republican in Congress is Finally Leaving

After a series of public, embarrassing stories that demonstrate why he should not be a public servant, this Texas congressman is calling it quits.

The Worst Republican in Congress is Finally Leaving

A blistering new report from CNN may have put the final nail in the coffin of the career of Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-TX).

Former staffers discussed in detail with CNN disgusting remarks made by the congressman over the course of their tenure. In the case of a former communications director, working for Farenthold was so nausea-inducing that it caused him to vomit daily.

Here’s just one example why:

One comment from the congressman was especially personal. [Former communications director Michael] Rekola was about to leave town to get married in July 2015, when, he said, Farenthold, standing within earshot of other staffers in his Capitol Hill office, said to the groom-to-be: “Better have your fiancée blow you before she walks down the aisle — it will be the last time.” He then proceeded to joke about whether Rekola’s now-wife could wear white on her wedding day — a clear reference, Rekola said, to whether she had had premarital sex.

Worse still is the fact that Farenthold “regularly” called aides and staff members “f**ktards,” as CNN wrote it. (Editorial note from NTK: CNN should be advised that the least offensive aspect of that word is the starred out portion.)

Farenthold of course made the matter worse by claiming he only called aides that term “in jest.”

He acknowledged that he regularly referred to aides as “f**ktards,” but that it was “in jest, not in anger.”

“In hindsight, I admit it wasn’t appropriate,” Farenthold said.

It’s embarrassing that a grown man of 56 would claim to not know that using that slur is inappropriate, let alone a man who represents thousands in Congress.

Farenthold announced Thursday that he would not seek reelection. He does intend to serve out the remainder of his term, however. Earlier this month, another former communications director filed a lawsuit against Farenthold, alleging sexual harassment.

By all accounts, Farenthold was undeserving of the position of congressman, and the good people of Texas will be better off without him.
