Theresa May: 2 Charged with Nerve Agent Attack Connected to Russian Intelligence

The two attempted to use a military-grade nerve agent known as Novichok to kill former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia.

U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May said her government conducted an investigation and concluded that the two being charged were officers in Russia’s military intelligence service, GRU:

British authorities identified the suspects as Russian nationals travelling on genuine passports under the aliases Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov. Prime Minister Theresa May said the government had concluded they were officers in Russia’s military intelligence service GRU.

“The GRU is a highly disciplined organisation with a well-established chain of command, so this was not a rogue operation,” May told parliament. “It was almost certainly also approved outside the GRU at a senior level of the Russian state.”

Skripal was himself a former GRU agent, living in hiding in the U.K. after he “betrayed dozens of agents to Britain’s MI6 foreign spy service.” He and his daughter were found unconscious on a bench in Salisbury, about 90 miles southwest of London, on March 4.

A Russian official denied his country’s involvement in the nerve agent attack, which killed one person and hospitalized 20, at a U.N. Security Council meeting in April.

The U.S. announced imposed sanctions against Russian following the attack. Those sanctions went into effect last month.
