Two New York Democrats, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Rep. Adriano Espaillat, said during a press conference Sunday that they are willing to vote against a year-end budget bill if it does not include a provision protecting so-called “Dreamers.”

President Trump announced earlier this year he is sun-setting the program known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Gillibrand and Espaillat want the program continued, and say they are willing to stop government services for millions of Americans in order to do that.

In her remarks, though, Gillibrand tried to portray the looming shutdown as a Republican-caused event. In fact, it is Democrats who would need to vote against the spending bill to shut the government down.

“If Republicans refuse to do the right thing and protect Dreamers in this long-term spending bill, they are going to cause the government to shut down,” said Gillibrand, “because I’m not going to vote for a long-term spending bill that doesn’t protect our Dreamers. Period, it’s that simple.”

The federal government is expected to run out of funds by Friday, December 8. Senate Republicans are expected to introduce a two-week funding bill this week to give senators more time to iron out longer-term funding legislation.
