Planned Parenthood, one of the top pro-choice groups in the country and a powerful ally of the Democratic Party, announced its first major campaign of 2018 this week: a $20 million effort across eight states.

While some attention has been paid to which Democrats will benefit from the campaign, less attention has been paid to which Democrats were left behind.

Here are the five vulnerable Senate Democrats who Planned Parenthood thought weren’t worth their money.

  • Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV)
  • Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-IN)
  • Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO)
  • Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND)
  • Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT)

The snub may be particularly hurtful for McCaskill, Heitkamp, and Tester, who recently received 100-percent scores from the pro-choice group. Even Manchin (57 percent) and Donnelly (67 percent), though, scored above 50 percent.

Now, Planned Parenthood may realize their brand is less than stellar in some of these states that went for Trump over Clinton in 2016. But more importantly, this may be another indicator the Democratic ‘establishment’ is moving to the left, preferring to focus on electing very pro-choice Democrats in blue states over moderate Democrats from red and purple states. It’s a bold strategy.
