This GOP Governor’s Poll Numbers Are Off the Charts in Blue Massachusetts

Gov. Charlie Baker (R-MA) is running for re-election in 2018, and from the looks of his polling data about nine months from Election Day, he’s sitting pretty.

A new WBUR/MassINC poll showed Baker with strong favorability and even better job performance numbers.

Baker’s favorable rating is at 66 percent and his unfavorable rating is at 17 percent.

Baker’s 66-percent favorability is up two ticks from June 2017 when the same polling firm found 64 percent of voters viewed Baker favorably.

But even more impressive than his favorability is Baker’s job approval:

Baker, a Republican who is up for re-election this year, maintained a high job approval rating in the poll, with 74 percent giving him a thumbs up, and 13 percent saying they disapproved of the job he’s doing. Thirteen percent said they didn’t know or they were undecided.

Seventy-three percent of voters said the state is headed in the right direction, while 19 percent said Massachusetts is on the wrong track.

These numbers easily make Baker the most popular elected official in the state. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) has a 54-38 favorability rating, but the poll did not ask about her job approval rating.

A July poll from Morning Consult found Baker to be the most popular governor in the country.
