This One Stat Could Make Democrats Sweat in 2018

The president's approval rating in a number of areas could cause Democrats problems. If they improve, Nancy Pelosi's brand could be in real trouble.

A result in a recent Monmouth University poll should worry Democratic candidates in districts across the country, with swing area voters giving President Trump a thumbs-up.

Democrats are hoping to knock off Republican incumbents across the country and take back their congressional majorities. But the American people may have different ideas.

Forty-nine percent of Americans in 2016 “swing” counties approve of Trump’s job performance, while only 40 percent disapprove.

Trump’s approval, on net, is stronger in “swing” counties than in counties the president won by a wide margin in 2016.

The “swing” counties offer a strong contrast with the overall result. Only 41 percent of Americans approve of the president versus 50 percent disapproval, according to the poll. Even among registered voters, Trump is still underwater.

Much of the disapproval towards Trump seems to be driven solely by already anti-GOP areas, the poll reveals. In strong Clinton counties, only 30 percent approve of the president’s job performance, while he faces 62 percent disapproval.

To retake congressional majorities, Democrats will have to convince Americans outside the Clinton bubbles. But those areas are still standing with Trump for now.
