According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), a plan led by moderate Republican senators to shore up ObamaCare’s ailing markets could reduce health care premiums by 20 percent in 2020.

The Hill reported on the CBO’s estimates on Wednesday.

An updated bill to shore up ObamaCare’s markets would reduce premiums by 10 percent next year and by 20 percent in 2020 and 2021, according to preliminary estimates from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

…Several changes have been made to the bill since Sens. Lamar Alexander(R-Tenn.) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.) introduced it last year, including an added requirement that funds not be used for plans that cover abortions, something House Republicans demanded. Alexander and Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) have been working on the changes.

The CBO’s suggested price tag – $10 billion a year for three years, or less than one percent of the new discretionary spending cap Congress agreed to in February – appears at first glance a small price to pay for a deal that could cut high ObamaCare premium costs for those buying insurance on the market.

The bipartisan fix orchestrated by Alexander and Murray first emerged in October 2017, as NTK Network reported at the time. President Trump appeared to endorse the plan, but then pulled back on Twitter.

It’s unclear what President Trump will think of the revised plan, now that CBO says it could cut premiums by a lot.
