This Poll on the Issues is a Big Red Flag for Democrats for 2020

A new poll found American voters want Democrats to tackle health care if they win the White House and Congress in 2020. Here's why that's a problem.

This Poll on the Issues is a Big Red Flag for Democrats for 2020

On Monday, Vox reported on a new poll of American voters that asked them what they want Democrats to prioritize if they take back Congress and the White House in the 2020 elections.

Out of all likely voters, 31 percent said they would want Democrats to focus on health care. Guns were the second most cited issue, at 15 percent, followed by immigration (14 percent), deficit reduction (11 percent), and climate change (only 6 percent).

Clearly, health care is on the minds of American voters, and rightfully so, given issues around cost, regulation, and access to care.

The issue could become a thorn in Democrats’ side, though – in 2020 and beyond – because many Democrats now seem insistent on pushing single-payer health care in America.

NTK Network has covered the single-payer proposals, spearheaded by democratic socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), frequently over the past year. We noted in September 2017 that the “Medicare for All” proposal would cost up to $2.5 trillion a year, and would lead to trillions of dollars in new taxes.

The issue carries electoral peril for Democrats, too. NTK Network noted that support for single-payer plummets when Americans are asked “if they’d still support the plan if it ‘eliminate[d] employer provided health plans and there would be only one government plan.'”

Sanders shows no signs of letting up, though, indicating single-payer could regularly hamper Democrats’ chances in 2020.
