Former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, in a commencement address at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) on Wednesday, told graduating cadets that the country is facing a “growing crisis of ethics and integrity.”

The former secretary of state emphasized the importance of the “truth,” saying it is essential to the survival of a democracy.

“It is only by a fierce defense of truth and common set of facts that we create the conditions for a democratic, free society, comprised of richly diverse peoples,” he said. “If our leaders seek to conceal the truth, or we as people become accepting of alternative realities that are no longer grounded in facts, then we as American citizens are on a pathway to relinquishing our freedom.”

Tillerson told the crowd that countries like Russia, Iran, North Korea, and China are societies that are not committed to the truth.

The secretary of state was fired earlier this year, and President Trump replaced the outgoing top diplomat with former CIA Director Mike Pompeo.
