Tim Cook Will Be Deposed in Qualcomm Suit

Apple CEO Tim Cook will be deposed in the messy legal battle between the tech giant and its modem chip supplier, Qualcomm, according to documents filed in the South District of California.

The deposition, scheduled for June 27, will feature Cook answering questions from Qualcomm’s team of lawyers regarding Apple’s business practices. Mashable has more:

Apple filed a $1 billion suit against the chipmaker more than a year ago, alleging the company was overcharging for royalty payments. A few months later, Qualcomm hit back with its own suit, alleging Apple shared proprietary code with one of Qualcomm’s top competitors: Intel.

Cook has been making the rounds lately, accepting a human rights award in his native Alabama on Wednesday. MSNBC is airing an interview Cook did last week with host Chris Hayes and Recode’s Kara Swisher. Cook used that platform to criticize Facebook, a move some data experts saw as hypocritical.

At issue between Qualcomm and Apple is the iPhone maker’s decision to intentionally slow down phones that contain Qualcomm’s modem chips. Apple uses both Intel and Qualcomm chips to help defray costs and create competition, but Intel’s chips max out at an inferior speed when compared to Qualcomm’s.

It’s not the first time Apple has been blasted for slowing down users’ phones. In December of last year, the company revealed they intentionally slowed down older phones.
