Tim Ryan Is Considering Challenging Pelosi Again

Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) is considering mounting another challenge against House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) leadership of the House Democratic Caucus, according to a report published by Politico on Monday.

Following Democrats’ stunning losses in 2016, Ryan challenged Pelosi’s leadership and won one-third of the caucus’ backing.

Ryan had previously ruled out challenging Pelosi again, but following the stunning primary defeat of Rep. Joe Crowley (D-NY), the Chair of the House Democratic Caucus, Ryan is considering another leadership bid.

“The Crowley race changed a lot for a lot of us,” Ryan said in an interview with Politico. “There was a lot of assumption that he was going to be moving forward in leadership, and so losing that election put everybody in a state of mind to reevaluate what was happening.”

Politico reported:

“Ryan said he’s been approached by several colleagues asking him to reconsider another dark horse leadership bid in the weeks since Crowley’s primary. And while Ryan wouldn’t commit to challenging Pelosi, multiple sources within the caucus have told POLITICO over the last several days he seems to be strongly leaning that way.”

Ryan added that he “wouldn’t get in unless I thought I could win,” and that he’s not going to run “just to do it.”

“Leader Pelosi’s sole focus is on winning the House,” a spokesperson for Pelosi told Politico. “The leader has not asked for support from members, but she is delighted with the support she is receiving from the caucus.”
