TIME Magazine picked murdered columnist Jamal Khashoggi and other journalists under literal and metaphorical fire in 2018 as its “Person[s] of the Year” on Tuesday.

The magazine will have four different covers for the four sets of people jointly awarded the “Person of the Year” distinction.

Edward Felsenthal, TIME‘s editor-in-chief, explained why the magazine picked journalists this year.

For taking great risks in pursuit of greater truths, for the imperfect but essential quest for facts that are central to civil discourse, for speaking up and for speaking out, the Guardians—Jamal Khashoggi, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, Maria Ressa and the Capital Gazette of Annapolis, Md.—are TIME’s Person of the Year.

Khashoggi’s likely murder, by people tied to the Saudi Arabian government, has led to calls for a sea change in the relationship between the U.S. and one of its top allies in the Middle East.
