Tom Perez Just Explained Why DNC Fundraising Is a Disaster

The Democratic Party's fundraising numbers are in the tank, but that hasn't created any sense of urgency in their chair.

In an appearance on Major Garrett’s CBS podcast on Friday, Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Tom Perez didn’t express too much enthusiasm when asked whether he likes to fundraise for the party.

Garrett interrupted Perez’s bragging about Democratic investments to ask if he enjoyed fundraising.

“Fundraising is a necessary part of the job,” Perez replied.

“Do you like it?” the CBS host asked again, laughing.

The DNC chair repeated his previous answer. Perez then emphasized the “small-dollar” nature of donations to the party.

But the DNC’s fundraising is “small-dollar” in more ways than one, with the party apparatus’s fundraising cratering in 2017.

The committee had some of its worst fundraising months in years in 2017. As an example, Perez’s organization only raised $5.7 million in November, when the party had raised at least $5.9 million every November since 2007. The Democrats’ money situation is so bad that they fired their fundraising chief only months into her tenure.

Meanwhile, the Republican National Committee is setting records for all the money they are raising heading into the 2018 midterms.

Despite his apparent distaste for fundraising, Perez will have to learn to like it if he wants to keep up with Republicans in the money race.
