Billionaire Democratic activist Tom Steyer compared former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick to civil rights icons Martin Luther King, Jr. and Jackie Robinson during an event in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday.

Steyer was speaking at the Battle Born Progressive Summit when he made the comparison.

“You know I love to say: everyone loves Martin Luther King. When Martin Luther King was leading the civil rights movement, a hell of a lot of people hated Martin Luther King.”

Steyer told the audience. “Everbody loves Jackie Robinson. People hated Jackie Robinson.”

“They hate Colin Kaepernick. In 50 years, they’ll be remembering how much they loved Colin Kaepernick,” Steyer told the crowd.

During the 2016 NFL season, Kaepernick famously started the trend of players kneeling during the national anthem. The protest took off during the 2017 season, following comments made by President Trump bashing players for kneeling during the anthem.
