Tom Steyer Gets Pressed on Possible 2020 Presidential Campaign

"If I were to believe what you're saying with a straight face then you'd be in Wisconsin, you'd be in Michigan, you'd be in Florida," NBC's Chuck Todd said.

Billionaire and liberal activist Tom Steyer was pressed by NBC’s Chuck Todd on Tuesday on whether his impeachment campaign against President Donald Trump is actually a shadow presidential campaign for 2020.

During the interview, Todd pointed out to Steyer that, if he was actually trying to help Democrats retake the House in 2018, Steyer wouldn’t be spending the bulk of his TV ad dollars in states like Iowa, South Carolina, New Hampshire, and Nevada.

“You’re in media markets that are all about the first four primary states in the 2020 presidential,” Todd said. “Is this simply about you raising your profile to run for president?”

“Absolutely not,” Steyer said.

“Then why are you only targeting presidential primaries?” Todd asked.

Steyer then explained that his organization has been in these presidential primary states since 2014, because they are swing states.

“I’ve personally been going to those states for five years,” Steyer said. “South Carolina is something that is new, but the fact of the matter is we have been doing this for five years.”

Todd seemed to find Steyer’s answer laughable. “If I were to believe what you’re saying with a straight face, then you’d be in Wisconsin, you’d be in Michigan, you’d be in Florida for the last seven years,” Todd said, and not the states that Steyer is currently in.

Steyer pushed back, claiming his organizations are in those states. Todd quickly pointed out, though, that Steyer isn’t spending any ad money in those states.
