During an interview on “CBS This Morning” on Thursday, the newest Democratic presidential contender, Tom Steyer, announced he supported providing government-backed health care for illegal immigrants.

The question was originally posed to all of the Democratic candidates on the second night of the presidential debates in Miami last month. During that debate, every candidate on the stage, including Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, and Pete Buttigieg, raised their hand to affirm that they did support that policy.

“The short answer is going to be yes,” Steyer said before explaining his big-picture views on immigration.

“We have a failed immigration system,” he said. “We should have comprehensive immigration reform, which is a classic thing that this government has been unable to do for decades. So, in that context, what are you supposed to do with people who are part of society, live here, contribute to society, and yet are somehow under the radar or living in the shadows?”

“Yes, they are a part of society,” Steyer added.

But providing government-backed health care for illegal immigrants is a deeply unpopular move, according to a poll released by CNN last week.

According to the poll, 59 percent said the oppose giving government-run health care to undocumented immigrants. Just 38 percent said they support that practice, and 3 percent had no opinion.

Just this week, California announced that it would become the first state in the union to provide government-backed health care to illegal immigrants. That plan, however, would only cover individuals who are 25 years-old or younger.
