Tom Steyer’s Tone-Deaf Dismissal of Bill Clinton’s Sexual Misconduct

In the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, it’s clear men and women are taking the issues of sexual harassment and assault more seriously than ever before.

But an ad funded by and starring Tom Steyer, a billionaire California liberal, actually dismisses the very serious sexual misconduct of former President Bill Clinton while trying to slam President Trump.

Here is a partial transcript of Steyer’s remarks (our emphasis added):

“I’m Tom Steyer, and like you, I’m a citizen who knows it’s up to us to do something. It’s why I’m funding this effort to raise our voices together and demand that elected officials take a stand on impeachment. A Republican Congress once impeached a president for far less. Yet today, people in Congress and his own administration know that this president is a clear and present danger …”

Steyer’s comment is remarkably tone-deaf given the eruption of outcry against men using their positions of power to sexually intimidate, harass, and assault women and men.

To be clear: Bill Clinton, then the president of the United States, engaged in a sexual relationship with a 22-year-old White House intern in the Oval Office. He then lied about that act under oath and was subsequently impeached by the House of Representatives for doing so.

Steyer’s ad claims this act is “far less” than the supposed misdeeds of President Trump, although Steyer never once names an impeachable offense nor does he supply an evidence of one in his ad.

Steyer, who many believe will mount a 2018 gubernatorial bid in California or perhaps a White House run in 2020, is remarkably out of touch with his own party. Here are just a few of the liberal groups and individuals who believe Clinton ought to have resigned over this issue or believe the Democratic Party must acknowledge its role in defending a known sexual predator.
