Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) told CNN on Tuesday that the news President Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen is pleading guilty for lying to Congress “raises serious questions.” Nadler added House Democrats that will conduct an investigation that could be the start of the Democrats’ impeachment efforts against Trump.

ABC News reported that Cohen “entered a guilty plea for misstatements to Congress in closed-door testimony last year about his contacts with Russians during the presidential campaign.”

“The incoming House Judiciary chairman, Jerry Nadler, told us Cohen plea raises serious questions about what the Russian government has over Trump. He said Congress will investigate,” CNN’s Manu Raju tweeted on Thursday.

Raju then asked Nadler “if this raises impeachment possibility.”

“That obviously depends on what we find,” Nadler responded. “He lied to Congress apparently about dealings between Trump and Russia, that leads me to suspect that there are more dealings that the president wanted hidden. And this raises all kinds of questions..whether the Russian government has any kind of hold over the President”

In the next Congress, Nadler will likely be the House Judiciary Committee chair. This committee would deal with any impeachment proceedings against the president.

Earlier this month, Nadler said that House Democrats will “immediately” start investigating why Trump removed Jeff Sessions as attorney general.

Either of these investigations could be the start of House Democrats’ efforts to impeach Trump.
