Trump 2018 Preview

President Trump’s first year in office delivered wins for the American people, so it’s safe to assume that his second year will be just as eventful.

Trump and the Republican Congress set themselves up for success in the new year with a massive tax overhaul at the end of 2017. Now the president and congressional leaders are looking to enact two key legislative planks of the Republican platform as they prepare for the midterm elections.

Infrastructure: The president indicated after the successful tax reform package passed in December that he would pursue a massive infrastructure project in 2018. Trump has previously said that he would like to see $1 trillion go to rebuild America’s road and bridges, and Republicans are hoping that Democrats will join to back the legislation.

Entitlement Reform: According to The Hill, Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) told a radio show at the beginning of December that Republicans will pursue cuts to “Medicare, Medicaid and welfare programs next year as a way to trim the federal deficit.” Entitlement spending has spiraled out of control, and the failed effort to fully curtail Obamacare spending continued the cycle. Look for Republicans to follow Ryan’s lead and attempt to cut back federal spending.

2018 Midterms: Right now, Trump’s party has an advantage in Congress, but they’re facing an uphill battle in 2018. The president’s low popularity ratings could drag his party down as they fight to keep control of both chambers. However, Democrats are defending multiple Trump-state Senate seats, opening the possibility that the GOP could expand their Senate majority.
