Trump Admin Asks Iran to Stop Blocking Social Media

As Iranians continue to protest their government and its management of the economy, the Trump administration on Tuesday called on the regime to stop restricting the social media use of its citizens.

As CNN and others have reported, social media is used as a key organizing tool for protesters. Using it, thousands have taken to the streets in Iran to protest economic and political mismanagement of the Islamic republic.

While independent media coverage from inside the country has been limited, protesters have taken to apps like Telegram, which offers public channels for users in addition to encrypted messaging, to share information and videos of protests and clashes. Official media outlets have provided few details about the ongoing demonstrations.

The Trump administration’s active and public responses to the Iranian protests stand in contrast to the relative silence of the Obama administration during protests against the Iranian regime in 2009.
