The Trump administration just took a major punitive action against China, one that is symbolic in nature but that no other president has done before.

The New York Times‘ Helene Cooper reported Wednesday that the U.S. disinvited China from the biennial, multi-nation Rim of the Pacific military exercise, also known as RIMPAC.

The Pentagon cited China’s rapid military buildup on disputed islands in the South China Sea for withdrawing the invitation for Beijing to participate in the large-scale naval exercise known as Rim of the Pacific, or RimPac. Defense Department officials said on Wednesday that China’s decision to place surface-to-air missile systems and other offensive weaponry on the islands spurred the move.

…It marks the first time that China has been disinvited from RimPac, Commander [Christopher] Logan said.

The 2016 version of RIMPAC involved “[26] nations, 45 ships, five submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel,” according to a Navy press release. It was the 25th RIMPAC exercise, which began in 1971. Trump’s disinvitation of China makes him the first president to do so, in a line of commanders in chief stretching back to Richard Nixon.
