The Trump administration, in a statement released by the State Department on Friday, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression in honor of Ukraine National Day.

Since Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula and supported destabilizing rebels in Ukraine’s eastern regions in 2014, both the Trump and Obama administrations have provided aid to Ukrainian forces resisting the incursions.

In his statement, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that would continue:

The United States steadfastly supports Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. We pay tribute to those who have fought and sacrificed for freedom in Ukraine, and we stand behind Ukraine as it adopts transformational reforms to increase prosperity, security, and rule of law. The friendship between our countries runs deep, and we are committed to the success of a stable, prosperous, democratic, and free Ukraine.

The Trump administration has taken several steps to support the Ukrainian military in its fight against Russian forces. Among them:

  • Sending lethal weaponry to Ukrainian forces, drawing praise from both the Ukrainian president and former Vice President Joe Biden.
  • Approving $200 million in non-lethal aid following President Trump’s July meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
  • Supplying coal to Ukraine, helping it become energy-independent of Russia.
