Trump Admin Slaps Sanctions on Russia for UK Chemical Attack

The State Department announced on Wednesday that it will impose a new round of sanctions on the Russian state and affiliated individuals, following the Kremlin’s chemical attack in the United Kingdom.

The Trump administration affirmatively pointed the finger at Moscow, saying Russia bore responsibility for the attack on former spy Sergei Skripal.

State Department Spokeswoman Heather Nauert made the announcement in a press release:

Following the use of a “Novichok” nerve agent in an attempt to assassinate UK citizen Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia Skripal, the United States, on August 6, 2018, determined under the Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Elimination Act of 1991 (CBW Act) that the Government of the Russian Federation has used chemical or biological weapons in violation of international law or has used lethal chemical or biological weapons against its own nationals.

The release noted that the sanctions will go into effect August 22.

One U.K. citizen died after coming into contact with chemical residue from the attack.
