President Donald Trump defended the electoral college from Democrat critics in a series of tweets Tuesday night, arguing that candidates would only focus on big cities and ignore smaller states altogether.

The tweets come after a series of Democratic candidates publicly stated they support abolishing the electoral college, an election system established by the founding fathers in the Constitution.

During a CNN townhall meeting on Monday, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) said she would “get rid of the electoral college” in favor of a national voting system.

And Warren isn’t alone. Asked about the Massachusetts senator’s statement Tuesday afternoon, former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) agreed that “there’s a lot of wisdom” in Warren’s proposal.

Not to be outdone, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) also admitted that she was “open to the discussion” about abolishing the electoral college. “There’s no question that the popular vote has been diminished in terms of making the final decision about who’s the president of the United States and we need to deal with that,” she said during an appearance on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” “So, I’m open to the discussion.”

Changing the Constitution would require two-thirds votes from both the House and Senate and to be ratified by three-fourths (or 38) of the 50 states. Given what some states would stand to lose in this proposal, it seems very, very unlikely that the electoral college will be abolished any time soon.
