President Trump, in an early morning tweet on Tuesday, defended Chief of Staff John Kelly, a former Marine general, from “[f]ake reporting” regarding Kelly’s job status in the White House.

A report from Vanity Fair’s Gabriel Sherman suggested that Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, is heading a search for the general’s replacement. A source told Sherman that the president called Kelly a “nutjob” in a phone conversation with a friend. According to the report, Trump is most angered by the perception that his chief of staff is effectively running his administration.

Trump wasn’t having any of it, and he tweeted Tuesday that Kelly “is doing a fantastic job”:

Kelly, Trump’s former Homeland Security secretary, was named White House chief of staff after the president dismissed Reince Priebus from the position in August.

Trump offered effusive praise for Kelly during a visit to western Pennsylvania, saying the former Marine general is “doing a great job.”

If the president’s tweets and public statements are any indication, Kelly isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
