President Trump made his support of Mitt Romney official Monday night with a tweet. Despite some back-and-forth criticism between the two Republicans, Trump said Romney would “make a great senator” and be a “worthy successor” to outgoing Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT).

Trump and his team seriously considered making Romney secretary of state last year, but the position ultimately went to former oil executive Rex Tillerson.

Romney’s announcement video, released last Friday, included a line some viewed as a criticism of the White House. “Utah welcomes immigrants from around the world. Washington sends immigrants a message of exclusion,” Romney said.

Still, that wasn’t enough to keep Trump on the sidelines.

Romney, for his part, thanked the president, adding, “I hope that over the course of the campaign I also earn the support and endorsement of the people of Utah.”

Romney, who formerly served as governor of Massachusetts, is very popular in Utah. But he’s not without his critics. Days before Romney’s announcement, the state’s GOP chairman criticized Romney because “his kids weren’t born here, [and] he doesn’t shop here.”

The most recent poll conducted in Utah found Romney leading top Democrat Jenny Wilson, 64-19.
