Trump Endorses Wisconsin’s Leah Vukmir After Big Primary Win

Following her victory over businessman Kevin Nicholson in the contentious Wisconsin U.S. Senate primary, Leah Vukmir received the endorsement or President Trump on Wednesday morning.

Vukmir, who earned the backing of House Speaker Paul Ryan earlier this summer, overcame massive spending by Nicholson. She credited grassroots support for her win:

Vukmir relied on an organizational apparatus created by Republicans in the past eight years. During the final days of the race, she hopscotched from one party headquarters to the next, imploring volunteers to work the phones, knock on doors and bring out the party faithful.

Impressed by her win, Trump tweeted this message Wednesday morning:

For his part, Nicholson immediately backed Vukmir against incumbent Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI). According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Nicholson “accepted the result and said he would fight for Vukmir during the general election.”

The Vukmir-Baldwin matchup will surely be a contentious one. Baldwin recently brushed off the $32.6 trillion price tag of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) Medicare for All plan as no big deal.

Republicans have made gains in the state in recent years, with Gov. Scott Walker (R-WI) winning two consecutive terms as governor. He is currently running for a third. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) won in both 2010 and 2016. Prior to Trump’s electoral win in November 2016, the last Republican to win Wisconsin in a presidential contest was Ronald Reagan in 1984.
