Trump: Get Me Kim Jong-un One-on-One

They're not fighting words from the president, though. He appears to believe that only a leader-to-leader chat will achieve peace between the U.S., North Korea, and South Korea.

Trump: Get Me Kim Jong-un One-on-One

President Donald Trump wants to meet with Kim Jong-un one-on-one, with only interpreters present, a major South Korean newspaper reported this week.

Bloomberg said, of the report from paper Chosun Ilbo.

The U.S. president hopes to speak with the North Korean leader at their upcoming summit with only interpreters present, the Chosun Ilbo reported Thursday, citing multiple unidentified South Korean diplomatic sources.

…Trump believes groundbreaking results can be attained only if the number of accompanying officials is minimized, one of the people was quoted as saying by the newspaper. This reflects Trump’s personality as he wants all the spotlight focused on him, the report added.

The move would be consistent with Trump’s personality – remember “I alone can fix it” – but is not without risks, as having experts like CIA Director Mike Pompeo and Defense Secretary James Mattis would give Trump key aides to rely upon as the conversation between Trump and Kim develops.

Indeed, Axios‘ Mike Allen pointed out this morning that Trump “doesn’t know what Kim is capable of,” which raises the stakes for the meeting.

Be smart: Trump mostly projects strength internally. But there’s also been at least one quiet moment when a source saw Trump reflect on how he doesn’t know what Kim is capable of. That happened during the escalating verbal sparring between Kim and Trump last year: “The stakes had moved so far beyond what he’s dealt with before, he definitely became aware of that.”

It’s unclear what a meeting between Trump and Kim would look like – or even, at this point, where it would take place – but the developments are one to watch, given how historic a potential meeting would be.
