A higher proportion of Republicans are satisfied with the direction of the U.S. than at any point since 2007, according to a new poll released by Gallup on Monday.

Gallup’s Justin McCarthy wrote:

About six in 10 Republicans (61%) say they are satisfied with the way things are going in the U.S. — the party’s highest level of satisfaction since February 2007. This latest uptick comes on the heels of a major victory on tax reform for the president and congressional Republicans at the end of 2017.

Unsurprisingly, Democrats are far less satisfied with the direction of the country. After between 40 and 60 percent of Democrats regularly said they were satisfied during the Obama years, from 2009 through 2016, only seven percent reported satisfaction in 2017.

Independents as usual, were somewhere in between, at 31 percent.

Two interesting findings from Gallup: Republican satisfaction extended to the direction of their states (67 percent satisfied, vs. 58 percent of Democrats) and local communities (87 percent satisfied, vs. 75 percent of Democrats).

The important question, of course: will high satisfaction among Republicans turn into high turnout in the midterm elections? To keep majorities in the House, Senate, and statehouses around the country, Republicans may need it.
