Hours after Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement, President Trump put the pressure on a red-state Democrat to vote for his eventual nominee in an appearance in North Dakota.

Speaking to a North Dakota crowd, Trump slammed their Democratic senator, Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), for her party’s obstruction and her possible coming ‘no’ vote on his nominee.

The president touted his selection of Justice Neil Gorsuch, a former Kennedy clerk, calling the justice a “star.”

“We have a pick to come up. We have to pick a great one,” Trump said. “We need to pick one that’s going to be there for 40 years, 45 years.”

“Heidi will vote no to any pick we make for the Supreme Court – she’ll be told to do so,” the president told the crowd. He mused that his pressure may force eventually force her to vote yes.

“But I will tell you, she’ll vote no the day after the election on everything,” Trump added, calling for North Dakotans to replace her with Republican Kevin Cramer.
